Riflessioni sulle finalità
della nuova "Promessa Geoetica"

Come forse molti di voi sapranno, nella sessione estiva delle Lauree magistrali delle Università di Modena e Reggio Emilia e di Milano, rispettivamente ai Neodottori in Scienze e tecnologie Geologiche e in Scienze della Terra, è stata consegnata la pergamena contenente la "Promessa Geoetica", pronunciata ufficialmente, con grande emozione, dai neo laureati.

Ancora sotto l’influsso positivo e la grande soddisfazione di aver visto realizzato uno degli obiettivi più simbolici che l’allora Commissione di Geoetica della FIST (Matteucci R., Gosso G., Peppoloni S., Piacente S., Wasowski J., 2014 - The Geoethical Promise: A Proposal. Episodes, vol. 37, n. 3, pp. 190-191); (Piacente S. 2014 – La Geoetica, in "Geomorfologia Culturale", Panizza M., Piacente S., pp. 318 – 322. Pitagora Editrice, BO) si era prefissa, trovo ora importante esprimere alcuni pensieri e riflessioni che penso possano aiutare a rendere ancora più efficace e pregnante questo significativo successo.

L'ufficializzazione di questo atto simbolico, denso però di significato per chi crede nel valore etico e sociale della nostra professione di geologi e nella sua forza culturale e educativa, rappresenta senza dubbio un importante passo avanti verso una valorizzazione degli studi e delle ricerche nel vasto campo della conoscenza e delle dinamiche del nostro Pianeta, specialmente sui temi legati ai rischi e alle risorse. 

Ne deriva una presa di coscienza della funzione sociale e dell’autorevolezza del ruolo che il geologo per primo deve riconoscere alla sua professione, per potersi proporre a pieno titolo e diritto nei dibattiti e nelle responsabilità delle questioni riguardanti le dinamiche della Terra. Perché ciò avvenga, occorre che sia fatto un lavoro a monte della fase ultima di dichiarazione di dottore in Scienze geologiche. Occorre infatti che la proposta sia il risultato di una fase preparatoria sviluppata in tutto il corso di studi per capirne in pieno l’importanza e i risvolti culturali e sociali. In caso contrario si rischia di lasciare ai neo laureati una bella pergamena, che li gratifica nel momento della consegna, ma che rischia di rimanere uno dei tanti attestati di buona volontà che entreranno nella loro vita sia professionale che di docenza e di ricerca.

Ogni docente con le sue ricerche e le sue competenze deve trovare le parole e i metodi utili a far percepire l’importanza etica che deve permeare il lavoro dei futuri professionisti, soprattutto in un’epoca come la nostra di evidente degrado ambientale, derivante da una mancanza di responsabilità generalizzata riguardo alla tutela, alla sicurezza e alla valorizzazione di tutti i beni del nostro Pianeta. Ne consegue una nuova e urgente responsabilità, che implica la struttura di tutto il corso di laurea. Quindi non solo "l'impegno che coinvolge il neo-laureato", ma soprattutto quello che diventa irrinunciabile all'interno di ogni corso, con uno sguardo comune, sia verso il passato, visto come un pilastro irrinunciabile cui guardare (anche in senso critico), sia verso il futuro, più impegnativo, ma comunque diverso, più responsabile.

È un modo, inoltre, di riaffermare la fiducia verso la scienza e il suo potere unificante per un pensiero culturale sempre più disponibile al confronto e alla cooperazione.

La finalità è anche quella di promuovere un nuovo contesto istituzionale, didattico e culturale, da realizzare attraverso un dibattito costante e più aperto tra le diverse anime della nostre discipline, superando anche quelle pigrizie intellettuali, spesso causate da impegni e compiti istituzionali, ma non per questo giustificabili, che sacrificano e oscurano la grande risorsa etica insita nel patrimonio delle conoscenze geologiche.

*Sandra Piacente

Già professore associato di geografia e geologia ambientale presso l'Università di Modena e Reggio Emilia, ha coordinato progetti di ricerca ex 60% e un progetto nazionale COFIN sui geositi. Ha inoltre collaborato a numerosi progetti internazionali (CNR e MIUR). Autrice di libri di testo e di un centinaio di pubblicazioni scientifiche di geomorfologia, educazione ambientale, formazione e divulgazione scientifica; attualmente i suoi interessi sono orientati  agli aspetti etici della ricerca geologica.

The Geoethical Promise in the ceremony of the geological master degree in geology at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (Italy)

As announced by Silvia Peppoloni (IAPG Secretary General) at the 72nd IUGS EC meeting in Potsdam (Germany) on 22-26 January 2018, the "Geoethical Promise" (http://www.geoethics.org/geopromise) has been included as official declaration during the ceremony for the geological master degree in the Italian Universities, thanks to the cooperation of the IAPG-Italy and the Italian Geological Society.

On 19 July 2018, the "Geoethical Promise" (the parchment is below) was read at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (UNIMORE) during the cerimony of the master degree in geology (video below, in Italian).

This was a memorable event! We hope the "Geoethical Promise" will be adopted in many Universities all over the world!

We remind you that the "Geoethical Promise" (avalilable in 35 languages: http://fliphtml5.com/gqru/ttwl) is included in the "Cape Town Statement on Geoethics" (http://www.geoethics.org/ctsg), supported by 19 geoscience organizations.

Silvia Peppoloni said that "... Who in these years has worked hard with me to achieve this result can understand the emotion that I have felt looking at these images, and also the joy and the awareness of having left a mark in the history of geosciences. ​I can only thank all those who have helped me, and in particular Prof. Sandra Piacente and Prof. Elisabetta Erba, not by chance two women: their sensitivity and support have made possible the officialization of this symbolic act, full of meaning for those like me who believe in the ethical and social value of our profession as geologists, in the cultural and educational power of our beloved geo-disciplines ...".

"L’edizione 2018 del Rapporto sul consumo di suolo in Italia, la quinta dedicata a questo tema, fornisce il quadro aggiornato dei processi di trasformazione del nostro territorio, grazie alla cartografia aggiornata del Sistema Nazionale per la Protezione dell’Ambiente (SNPA), che vede ISPRA insieme alle Agenzie per la protezione dell’ambiente delle Regioni e delle Province Autonome, in un lavoro congiunto di monitoraggio svolto anche utilizzando le migliori informazioni che le nuove tecnologie sono in grado di offrire.
Il Rapporto analizza l’evoluzione del consumo di suolo all'interno di un più ampio quadro delle trasformazioni territoriali ai diversi livelli, attraverso indicatori utili a valutare le caratteristiche e le tendenze del consumo e fornisce nuove valutazioni sull'impatto della crescita della copertura artificiale, con particolare attenzione alla mappatura e alla valutazione dei servizi ecosistemici del suolo".

"The ethical duty to divulge geosciences and the improvement of communication skills to fulfil it"

Abstract:
In recent years the commitment to disseminate the geological knowledge, making it available for citizens and decisionmakers, has been recognized as a precise ethical duty of the geologist. However the fulfilment of the duty to disseminate the geoscience knowledge requires good communication skills that should be adequately trained, since often the university studies don’t include such training. A specific research has been carried out to explore the possibility to develop a short training course capable of improving the expressive and communication abilities of professionals. A set of exercises has been also expressly developed to improve the metacognitive skills of the participants (metacognition is the knowledge and regulation of one’s cognitive activities in learning processes). The course has been delivered to professionals belonging to the Professional Association of Engineers (FOIT) in Turin, Italy, and has been able to significantly improve their expressive and communication abilities, increasing their interest and willingness to divulge their knowledge, recovering their confidence to succeed in this task and helping them to become more effective communicators. The contents of the course are now available, upon request, for anyone interested in teaching it elsewhere and/or improving its contents. Providing both professional and research geologists with means to renew their interest and ability to communicate can be a useful contribution to raise their (geo)ethical conscience and to help them to more easily carry out their ethical commitment.
